Our Savior's Lutheran Church

Troop 118 has made some good changes since our last newsletter. Our new permanent sponsor is Our Savior's Lutheran Church located at 1274 Cunningham Ln. S. We now meet weekly on Tuesday evenings at the church at 7:00 p.m., usually in the Fellowship Hall. We have also purchased a new Troop Flag with the help of our new sponsor. We would like to thank All Out Fire for their help in being our temporary sponsor.

March 16-17 YMCA Camp

We will be heading for Camp Greider in West Salem for a 10 mile hike (the first toward Hiking Merit Badge), a Service Project, camping, cooking, and fun. We are leaving at 9:00am Saturday and returning about 2:00pm on Sunday. Pack inspection, permission slips and $10.00 are expected at the meeting on the 12th. Any parents not already planning on going are still invited!

No Meeting During

Spring Break

Eagle Scout Jeff Nelson

Congratulations to Jeff Nelson on his newly achieved Eagle Scout rank. He successfully completed all requirements and passed his Council Board of Review on January 23rd. This achievement makes Jeff the first Eagle Scout for Troop 118. His Court of Honor is in the works and invitations will be mailed soon. Jeff and his parents would like to thank everyone in the Troop for their part in helping Jeff reach this goal.

Candy Bar Sale Has Started

The annual BSA Candy Bar sale officially begins on March 12th. Scouts can not only earn prizes from the Council for participation, but also earn 50% of the profit on what they sell toward their Scout Account to apply to outings, dues or camp. If you have difficulty meeting the monthly dues obligation or outing costs, this is a good way to meet them without hurting your pocketbook! Scouts do have a minimum to sell to be eligible for the incentive outing. Beef Sticks are also for sale this year. Teresa Harriman is the Chairperson for this sale. Call her at 364-9593 if you have any questions. Deadlines are as follows:

April 6 Popcan Drive

After a canceled effort due to cold weather, we will try this again. We have a new method of sorting now and it will be far less trouble for all involved. We will meet at the church at 9:00am and should be dining on some culinary treat somewhere by noon. More details later.

Eagle Project by Paul Willey

Paul has completed the first portion of his handicap access railing project at the YMCA. March 30 is the scheduled date to finish it up. Keep your calendar open for this.

Silver Falls Campout

April 13-14

The PLC decided to pay Silver Falls State Park a visit and help clean up some storm damage as a Service Project on April 13th and 14th. The second 10 mile MB hike will fit in also. We probably won't be able to visit all the falls because of washed out bridges. More details later.

Summer Camp

July 21 -27

Summer Camp deposits have been sent in. The next deadline is May 7th for the balance. If the deadline is not met, there is an additional $10.00 cost and the T-shirt is no longer free. Physicals will also be needed for Scouts to attend. A new one is needed every 3 years.

Tentative Incentive Outing Location

(For Qualifying Scouts)

Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium. Located in Tacoma, WA. The date is firm… May 18th and 19th. Scouts should be paying close attention to their attendance and Fund-raiser participation. This is a really cool place. And it's free for the Scouts… and the adults are going to wait on the Scouts and….I can't wait!!! -The SM-

A Court of Honor and family potluck will be held on Tuesday, April 23 at the church in the Fellowship Hall. A thru M on the roster can bring a main dish & dessert, N thru Z can bring a main dish & salad. Hope you can make it!

The Troops best opportunity to show off it's scout skills. Maud Williamson Park is the place 20-some Troops will meet and compete. We will be brushing up on these skills in upcoming meetings.

Policy Update

The Troop Committee has finalized several Troop Policies. The significant change in Youth Leadership Requirements:

" Leaders in positions that count toward rank advancement must be in attendance with proper uniform and have proper books for six out of eight consecutive meetings. The first missed meeting will result in an ASM discussion with Scout, second will result in an ASM discussion with Scout and phone call to parents, third will result in removal from office."

The significant change in the Outing Procedure:

"Scouts must be in attendance for a minimum of two out of four meetings immediately prior to outing to be able to attend outing."

The significant change in the Dues Policy:

"If a Scout is not current in his dues through the month prior to an outing, he may not attend Troop outings until he has brought his dues current."

The new Discipline Policy is complete. We will attempt to have a new Policy Book available at the Potluck/Court of Honor on April 23rd.

Committee Meeting March 18

The third Thursday of each month at 7:30 p.m. is our regular Committee meeting. We will now be meeting at the Church. However, the next meeting will be on Monday March 18. Parents are invited to attend and/or to contact Chairman Dan Willey with concerns they would like addressed.

First Aid and Citizenship in the World MB's

These two MB Classes will be done by mid March. Scouts need to finish up paperwork and catch up on missed classes. This will also help encourage adults to conduct more classes.

Upcoming Opportunities

There is a lot of activities coming up this summer. Most of this list can be done on your own or as a Troop.
